Get to know jet aircraft engines and the history of their development

History of Jet Engines
A jet engine patent was first filed in 1913 by French engineer Rene Lorin. Before that, the concept of a jet engine was inspired by a toy from ancient Roman times called the Hero’s Engine. The way this machine works uses a force system released by the jet’s mouth to produce a reaction that is the same as the jet’s thrust.
Lorin patented the Athodyd jet engine which had no rotating parts. This machine is more popularly called a pulse jet engine. However, this concept is still not suitable for jet-propelled aircraft because it is inefficient at low speeds.
Then Frank Whittle, a British Royal Air Force officer, an aerodynamics student at the University of Gottingen, and an Italian engineer developed a jet engine whose concept used rotating components, such as a compressor and turbine. This innovation was patented by Frank Whittle in 1930.
Whittle then founded the Power Jets company and successfully developed a jet engine. His company received a contract from the British Air Force. In 1942 the engine, namely type W-1x, was requested for a license by the United States.
The first test of the W-1X type engine was carried out in December 1940. The engine was then modified and declared suitable for use as aircraft operating power. The British jet engine aircraft, Gloster E.28/39, was first flown on May 15 1941 by a pilot named Gerry Sayer.
Types of Jet Engines
In its development, there were several types of jet engines. Jet engines are not only used to operate aircraft, but also other tools for human needs.
Turbojet Engine
Turbojet is the simplest aircraft engine. These engines were commonly used in early jet aircraft and commercial aircraft. Turbojet engines produce large thrust. This engine is also used to operate ships and trains.
Turbofan Engine
Turbofans are engines derived from jet engines that are used to operate fighter aircraft and commercial aircraft. This machine works using an internal fan with a small turbojet behind it as a driver. Turbofan engines are widely used because they are very efficient and produce less noise.
Turboprop Engine
A turboprop is a modified turbojet engine. Turboprop engines can only be used to operate low-speed aircraft. This machine can absorb the remaining fuel that drives the compressor and is classified as very fuel efficient.
Turboshaft
Turboshafts were originally turboprop engines without the addition of a propeller. This machine is generally used to operate helicopters. The power turbine of this engine is connected directly to the reduction gearbox. Now this machine is also used to operate power plants, oil pumps, gas pumping stations, ships.
